  5.     The declaration lasted only five minutes, but it may turn
  6. out to be the most important five minutes of President Alfredo
  7. Cristiani's career. On national television last week, Cristiani
  8. admitted, "It has been determined that there is involvement of
  9. some elements of the armed forces" in last November's slaying
  10. of six Jesuit priests.

  12.     Cristiani had little choice but to pursue a vigorous
  13. investigation. In the past, the few human-rights cases that
  14. have been prosecuted resulted in the conviction of only
  15. low-level military personnel. This time an irate U.S. Congress,
  16. which is considering $387 million in military and economic aid
  17. to San Salvador this year, demanded a thorough inquiry reaching
  18. into the highest levels of the Salvadoran military.

  20.     Though no arrests have yet been made, two lieutenants and
  21. 45 soldiers were detained last week, and the commander
  22. responsible for the zone where the priests lived was confined
  23. to quarters.
